Vocation Story
The Consecrated Life in the form of religious life first came to mind at the age of about 17, and after a little bit of discernment, I dismissed the thought. When I was 19, I began as a volunteer on team at Southwark Catholic Youth Service, living in Whitstable in Kent for a couple of years. I would sometimes drop in on one of our diocesan priests on my way back after breaks. One time he gave me a couple of books, one being on discernment. It was this book that helped me to start thinking more seriously about discerning my vocation; the journey began from there.
Friends took it a lot easier than my family in the early days of discernment. Over the years of discernment and formation, it became easier with my family. Today, all my friends, work colleagues and family are really supportive of my vocation.
As I first discerned religious life, there were doubts of which community or order I was supposed to be in. As I began to realise that the Lord was calling me to be a Consecrated Virgin, those doubts disappeared.
Living as a Consecrated Virgin is different to that of a religious in a community, and so hobbies and interests in many ways can be kept up. Yes, I can still meet friends for lunch, or see concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. I just have to be mindful of getting the balance, remembering that prayer and time with the Lord is vital in my everyday life.
I get a deep sense of joy when I remember that I am Consecrated, and mystically espoused to Him. A great gift that the Lord has given to me. Also, sharing in a life of discipleship, a life for the Lord which others live too, especially others called to Consecrated Virginity.
When thinking about any vocation, whether that is to marriage, the priesthood or the Consecrated Life, discernment takes place in the everyday, but also in times of silent prayer. Make time for silence in your daily life, and also speak to people who may be able to give you some guidance, such as a priest or a spiritual director. It takes time; enjoy the discernment. The Lord will make it clear to you of what He wants for your life, if you stay close to Him.
