On Wednesday 23 September, St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School in Hastings welcomed a visit from local MP, Helena Dollimore. During a special assembly, she spoke to the children about her role as an MP and the important work she does to represent the local community.
School Council members were delighted to meet Helena and they shared their own account of the visit and what they learned from the experience:
"Helena Dollimore came to our school and gave us an interesting talk about what she does as a Member of Parliament. Helena also talked about how she votes with other MPs around the UK. She shared some slides with us to explain more about Parliament and where our Prime Minister lives. We also had the opportunity to ask her questions about her responsibilities as an MP and how she became a Member of Parliament.
"She told us that she is trying her best to represent our local area and make sure that the voices of local people are heard. She explained how voting works in the House of Commons. When MPs vote, they have to walk through different corridors representing 'Yes' or 'No.' If they agree with both sides, they would have to walk through both the Yes and No corridors.
"Helena also told us that she had taken our ideas to the Government about improving playgrounds and children’s equipment in Hastings and Ore. Overall, she helped us understand the important role of an MP, their responsibilities and how they represent the people in their local area."
