Provost Canon Tony Churchill celebrates his Golden Jubilee.

July 15, 2021

The Provost of the Cathedral Chapter, Canon Tony Churchill’s Golden Jubilee celebrations took place last Saturday, 10 July at St Michael’s Ashtead. Canon Tony presided at a concelebrated Mass with ten other priests from the Diocese and beyond. The celebrations were attended by parishioners past and present as well as family and friends whom Canon Tony has known from the many national and diocesan positions he has held within the Church.

Bishop Richard and Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham attended, both of whom were taught by Canon Tony at St John’s Seminary.

Archbishop Bernard gave a beautiful homily in which he recalled Canon Tony's service as a priest. The Archbishop spoke of one piece of advice Canon Tony gave him that has remained with him throughout his ministry: the importance of being kind to the people you minister to, as they will always remember a priest’s kindness.

Mass was followed by a reception in the parish hall; all in all a wonderful celebration for Canon Tony and all his friends and family.
