Pope Francis receives the COVID-19 vaccine

January 18, 2021

Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI have received the Covid-19 vaccine

COVID-19 vaccine programmes are being rolled out across the world, bringing hope to millions of people affected by the ongoing pandemic. The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) announced in December 2020 that 'It is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines' adding that 'all vaccinations recognised as clinically safe and effective can be used in good conscience.'

The Vatican began its vaccination programme last week with Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, and the Private Secretary to the Pope Emeritus, Bishop Georg Gaensweinboth confirming that the Pope and Pope Emeritus had received their first dose of the vaccine.

Pope Francis referred to the vaccination as 'an ethical action, because you are gambling with your health, you are gambling with your life, but you are also gambling with the lives of others.'
