Ministers of the Word Gather for Inspiring Day of Reflection

January 28, 2026

Over 100 Ministers of the Word from across the diocese came together on Saturday, January 24 at St Michael's Church, Worthing, for a special Day of Reflection. The gathering held particular significance as one of Archbishop Elect Richard's last diocesan events before his appointment to Westminster on 14 February, and focused on deepening the Ministers' relationship with Scripture, the Lectionary, and the Liturgy of the Word.

The day began with a thoughtful exploration of the Bible and the Lectionary, inviting Ministers to reflect personally on why the Word of God holds such a central place in their daily lives and ministry.

The Archbishop Elect then led the group through the practice of Lectio Divina, guiding the Ministers to engage with Scripture in a more prayerful and contemplative way.

"It's a time we can meet together, pray together and really reflect on the importance of the ministry that [the readers] have taken on in their communities," he shared.

Following a shared lunch, the afternoon turned to the practical aspects of the ministry. Bishop Richard offered guidance on preparing to proclaim the readings and on how to approach different styles of biblical text.

The day concluded with Mass celebrated together.

Diocesan Liturgy & Music Adviser, Catherine Christmas, who helped organise the day, reflected on its purpose:

"It's a way of building our relationship with God, and helping us to live our lives as disciples … we get words and praises from scripture that helps to sustain us and helps to point the way for us."

Natalie Carless, Head Teacher at St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School in Angmering and a dedicated Minister of the Word, added:

"It's important we take time for reflection and improve our knowledge and to use that to proclaim God's word in the best way that we can."
