Holy Week is the most sacred time in the Christian liturgical year, commemorating the final days of Jesus' earthly life, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. It forms the gateway to the Easter Triduum and Easter Sunday, the "Feast of Feasts," where the Paschal Mystery - Christ's suffering, death, and rising - unfolds as the source and summit of salvation.
The Diocese has created three short films to accompany people across our family of faith through Holy Week. The films are presented by Canon Kieron O’Brien from The Catholic Parish of Brighton & Hove; Canon Jonathan Martin, Diocesan Administrator and parish priest of St Pancras, Lewes; and Fr Jonathan How, Moderator of Guildford Catholic Parish.
Film 1: Holy Week
In the first film - which can be watched before Holy Week begins - Canon Kieron O’Brien introduces Holy Week, highlighting the importance of reflection and prayer and the invitation to contemplate, at a deep level, the foundational mysteries of our Faith.
Film 2: Good Friday
In the second film, Canon Jonathan Martin explores the Good Friday Liturgy; Jesus’ self-offering on the Cross for love of us, the “immense goodness of God”, and the veneration of the Cross as an act and expression of our love.
Film 3: The Easter Vigil
The third film, presented by Fr Jonathan How, explores the wonder of the Easter Vigil as the greatest celebration in the Church’s year, highlighting that we made in the image of God and are not only witnesses to the Resurrection, but “sharers in The Word Who is Life.”
