Diocesan grandparents gather at Worth Abbey

June 20, 2025

Our popular annual Grandparents' Pilgrimage was held at Worth Abbey this year, with more than 90 people joining Bishop Richard and our Marriage and Family Life Adviser, Deacon Simon South, for the celebration last Wednesday (11 June).

The day began with a talk given by Fr Peter Williams, Prior of Worth Abbey. Addressing grandparents in the Abbey's Unity Room, Fr Peter explained what the Rule of St Benedict offers – both to the community at Worth and for grandparents. He also affirmed the importance of hope:

"The Benedictine life offers hope to the world" he said, "and has done so for many hundreds of years. We need to take time to explore and unpack it... Giving hope to your grandchildren is a key part of being a grandparent; through faith we find hope, hope that we can share with others, particularly our families. Hope is a precious gift for young people and one that is much needed. Grandparents have an opportunity to inspire their grandchildren."

The celebration of Mass followed Fr Peter's talk. Speaking during the homily, Bishop Richard highlighted the supportive role that grandparents have within their families: "You will, no doubt, have encouraged and supported your children often," he said. "Share the message of today's gospel by walking with those you love and encouraging them; be grandparents of encouragement, through your example and through your following of the gospel – which is the greatest gift."

Reflecting on the day, Deacon Simon said:

"It was a wonderful blessing to be joined by 92 grandparents from across the Diocese. The pilgrimage offered a great opportunity in a busy and hectic world, to share quiet time in the presence of the Lord, and come together as a community of grandparents through the Eucharist. It was a beautiful day of prayer, hope, friendship and affirmation."
