Catholics believe that every person has a value and dignity that comes directly from God’s creation of us in His own image and likeness. We have a responsibility to value everyone, supporting and protecting them from harm.
Everyone has the right to grow up in a caring and safe environment.
Most children and young people receive the love and care they need to develop into healthy, happy adults. However, some people have a particular need or background which make them more likely to experience harm or exploitation, these can include their gender, sexuality, race, age, religion, or a disability. This is not always the case; anyone can be vulnerable to being hurt by others.
It is important to remember that no one should hurt you.
Getting help
All parishes have a Safeguarding Representative whose role it is to help, their details should be displayed on the parish noticeboard at the back of your church. Safeguarding Reps are there to offer support and are experienced in dealing with difficult issues in a caring, supportive, and sensitive manner. It may be that they will direct you to someone else who has experience that would be of benefit to you.
There is also a Safeguarding Office within the Diocese you can contact if you are worried about something or someone within your church. You can contact the Safeguarding Team by E: safeguarding@abdiocese.org.uk or T: 01273 241203.
If you would like to speak to someone outside your parish or diocesan community the charity Childline (www.childline.org.uk) offers a range of help and advice. They can be contacted free on 0800 1111.
