Diocesan marriage preparation increases by 47%

May 18, 2026

Marriage catechists from across the diocese joined our Marriage & Family Life Adviser, Deacon Simon South, last month, to explore ways of working for the year ahead. Attendees spent time looking at the evangelistic opportunities the Holy Spirit brings through the joy of the sacrament, and the role Marriage catechists are being called to, as “workers in the vineyard”.

Reflecting afterwards, Dcn Simon said:

“It was wonderful to discuss the vocation of marriage with diocesan marriage catechists. We spent time looking at how we can support married couples in their journey together and bring marriage enrichment into parish pastoral life. Many of us will have read, with hope and joy, that a growing number of people - particularly young people - in the UK are seeking a life of faith.
“The Office for National Statistics reports that the total number of couples getting married in 2025 was 9% lower than in 2024. In stark contrast, the number of people undertaking diocesan marriage preparation programmes in our Diocese was 47% higher in 2025 than in 2024. Let us pray for all those seeking meaning, direction and purpose in their life, that they may hear the gentle encouragement of the Holy Spirit.”
