Delegates from across England and Wales gathered in Cardiff for the 2026 National Board of Religious Inspectors and Advisers (NBRIA) Conference last week (13-15 May), a three-day event celebrating collaboration, innovation and hope in Catholic religious education. Representatives from dioceses, alongside colleagues from the Catholic Education Service, Catholic Association of Teachers, Schools and Colleges, Missio, the Jesuit Institute and CAFOD, attended this year’s conference, which focused on the theme Anchored in Hope, inspired by the scripture verse: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
The conference welcomed a range of RE resource providers, including Oxford University Press, Magister, Day by Day and The Westminster Way, whose contributions supported discussion and networking throughout the event.
Opening keynote speaker, Dr Philip Robinson, addressed delegates on the findings of his recent thesis, Objectivity, Criticality and Pluralism – Challenges for Catholic Religious Education. His presentation prompted reflection on the evolving landscape of religious education.
On the second day, Lat Blaylock from RE Today led sessions exploring “Three priorities with the RED: deeper theology, wider creativity, varied pedagogy,” encouraging schools and dioceses to continue embedding the Religious Education Directory through imaginative and inclusive practice.
Delegates gathered for Mass for the Feast of the Ascension at Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral of St David (pictured), with Thursday afternoon's programme including a visit to the Gwen John exhibition and opportunities for networking and professional dialogue.
The final day of the programme featured an update on the Oscar Romero Award from coordinator Mugeni Sumba, alongside sessions sharing best practice from dioceses and updates from the NBRIA assessment working group.
The conference offered delegates a rich and engaging programme that celebrated the significant work taking place across dioceses and partner organisations to embed both the Religious Education Directory and the Prayer and Liturgy Directory in Catholic schools.
Julie Oldroyd, Chair of NBRIA and Director of Education in Arundel and Brighton said:
"Many thanks to those who hosted, facilitated and participated. The wisdom and collaboration of the delegates and participants ensured a successful conference.”
Delegates can now look ahead to 2027's Conference, which will be hosted in the Diocese of Salford."
The Conference organisers would like to thank sponsors Eteach and Churchmarketplace, as well as all those who contributed to the conference liturgies and times of prayer across the three days. Image: Archdiocese of Cardiff & Menervia.
