St Bede's is seeking a a teacher of maths to join its successful department from September 2026 on a full-time, permanent basis.

The mathematics department prides itself on having a well-focused and enthusiastic team which is always looking at improving teaching and making learning fun for the students.

There are a total of 18 maths teachers; ten are full-time and eight are part-time. There are a total of 13 specialist classrooms, installed with a projector and a desktop computer and equipped with an array of textbooks and resources. The department also has a bank of 32 Chromebooks which are used on a regular basis with many different classes. There is wireless internet access throughout the maths department and subscribe to many different websites including SparxMaths, Whiterose Maths and Mathsbox. This is in addition to having Autograph, Omnigraph and Geometer’s sketchpad installed on the network.

At the start of Year 7, students are tested in the first two weeks and are then put into maths sets based on these results, along with their Key Stage 2 results. Years 7 - 9 use the Collins maths White Rose Key Stage 3 books. Students are tested on a regular basis giving teachers the opportunity to set them targets, as well as monitor progress and make any set changes.

Homework is set on a regular basis using SparxMaths.

At KS4, the school enters students for the AQA GCSE exam. Generally sets 1 - 4 are entered for higher, set 5 is borderline, and sets 6 -7 enter foundation. Students use a variety of text books and resources including AQA Collins maths books, Elmwood press GCSE maths, White Rose maths, 10 ticks, Mathswatch and SparxMaths. Assessments are set on a regular basis. To prepare for each exam students are given packs of past exam questions and revision sessions are offered after school to provide extra support. Generally, students achieve around 90% 9-4 grades. The schools offers AQA Further Maths GCSE to our most able students in sets 1 & 2 and also support our weaker students with Entry Level Maths in set 7.

There is a strong Sixth Form intake with on average 100+ students studying A Level Maths and Further Maths in Years 12 and 13, where they follow the Edexcel course. The department has access to various resources including the Pearson textbooks, Active teach, Integral maths and DrFrostMaths. Students generally achieve 60% A*-B for A Level Maths and 100 A*-B for Further Maths.

Students are given opportunities at all ages to get involved in extracurricular activities, from master classes to university-led lectures, which enrich learning for the more able. Students enter the junior, intermediate and senior maths challenge run by the University of Leeds and regularly have students entered for the kangaroo challenges. Internally the team runs a lot of intervention for students in KS4 and KS5.
